Welcome to Staff Picks of May. Between catching Yann Martel, Ian McEwan, and Dav Pilkey at the Writers Festival, May was an absolute dream for a book lover. But the festival wasn’t the only place I found great stories this month. Here's some of my picks.

Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke

It's the book that's on everyone's reading list. I was lucky enough to get an advanced reading copy and I've thought about it ever since. No surprises this is topping the charts everywhere. My top pick of the year so far.

The Calamity Club by Kathryn Stockett

Another of my top picks of the year. A deep, beautifully written piece of literary fiction that still feels approachable. Just like Stockett's previous book The Help, this truly stands out from the crowd

Mortified by Pax Assadi

While I was disappointed to miss Pax Asadi during Auckland Writers Festival, diving into the book more than made up for it. It's a brilliant read. Highly recommended.

Samoan Made Simple by Jason Tiatia

I’ve been meaning to start learning the language for years, finally this book has given me no excuses. Easy to follow in format to dip in and out of. It's the perfect sign you've been waiting for to finally start your learning journey.

Organ Speak by Giulia Enders

If The Body Keeps the Score completely changed how you think about your health, you need to pick up Organ Speak as a great option for a companion read.

Mega Builds by Fred Mills

I went into this book unsure of what to expect and quickly found myself immersed in a topic I never thought I’d be interested in. Fred Mills brings incredible passion and clarity to the world of massive engineering.
