In Paris, Van Gogh experimented with pointilism, a style of painting that uses dots of distinct colour to create the illusion of form. This interpretation of trees in a forest is a good example of this style of painting. Van Gogh covered his entire canvas with dabs of paint creating light and shadow on the forest floor. Dabs of yellow paint in between the trees create the suggestion of a sunlit clearing somewhere further into the forest, this together with the tree in the foreground, enhances the sense of depth in the painting.
