About The Author

Tom Schamp

Born in 1970, Tom Schamp grew up in and around Brussels, where he continues to live. After graduating from the Applied Arts department at the Sint-Lukas Art School in Brussels, he spent an additional year studying Graphic Design in Poznan, Poland.

Tom has a long and varied track record, creating illustrations for both adult and children’s markets. He receives assignments from an international mix of clients, ranging from highly commercial projects and magazine illustrations to picture books. Over the past twenty years, Tom has published thirty-five picture books, many of which have been translated into different languages.

Tom’s style is described as ‘complex-naive,’ often infused with a touch of humor. For the past decade, he has painted individual elements of his illustrations separately on cardboard, which he then scans to create digital compositions. This technique allows him to find the right rhythm more easily and offers a balance between traditional craft and digital technology. Tom’s later work is considerably more detailed than his earlier illustrations, requiring a keen eye to appreciate every subtlety. He possesses a fascination for strange objects, small hand-painted boxes, stamps, and animal-shaped coffeepots.
