Swami Vivekananda
Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902)
Born Narendranath Datta in Calcutta, British India, Swami Vivekananda belonged to a traditional aristocratic Bengali Kayastha family. Spiritual from an early age, he was fascinated by wandering monks and practiced meditation.
Vivekananda met Ramakrishna around 1882, an encounter that proved life-changing. He eventually became Ramakrishna’s notable disciple. After Ramakrishna’s death, Vivekananda, along with other disciples, established the Ramakrishna Math at Baranagar. In December 1886, they took monastic vows, and Narendranath became Swami Vivekananda.
He played a major role in introducing yoga and Vedanta philosophies to the West, significantly contributing to Hinduism’s status as a major world religion. His birthday is observed as National Youth Day in India, and the anniversary of his famous speech at the Parliament of World Religions, September 11, is commemorated as World Brotherhood Day.
