Steve Gerber (1947-2008)

Steve Gerber first gained recognition for his work on Defenders, where he infused the non-team with a distinctive, unconventional perspective. He also introduced the iconic Howard the Duck in Adventure into Fear. In the 1970s, Gerber contributed scripts to titles such as Iron Man and Sub-Mariner. Beyond Marvel, he is also remembered for his work on DC’s Phantom Zone and Eclipse Comics’ Destroyer Duck.

Gerry Conway

Gerry Conway has penned scripts for Daredevil, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, and more. He played a significant role in Marvel’s horror boom of the 1970s with his contributions to Man-Thing, Tomb of Dracula, and Werewolf by Night. His tenure on Amazing Spider-Man included pivotal storylines like the death of Gwen Stacy and the introduction of the Punisher. Conway has also written for DC Comics, contributing to Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Legion of Super-Heroes. In television, he has written and produced episodes for shows like Diagnosis: Murder, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Huntress, and Matlock.

Roy Thomas

Roy Thomas joined the Marvel Bullpen as a writer and editor under Stan Lee, scripting major runs for nearly every title of the era, including Amazing Spider-Man, Avengers, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, Sub-Mariner, Thor, and X-Men. He wrote the first decade of Marvel’s Conan the Barbarian and Savage Sword of Conan, and launched series such as Defenders, Iron Fist, Invaders, and Warlock. At DC Comics, he developed All-Star Squadron, Infinity Inc., and related titles, significantly contributing to the revival of the Golden Age Justice Society of America. Thomas later became the editor of Alter Ego, a magazine focused on comic book history, and co-scripted the sword-and-sorcery films Fire and Ice and Conan the Destroyer.

Val Mayerik

Val Mayerik established himself as a distinctive artist in the comic book industry, moving beyond traditional superhero fare. He began his Marvel Comics career in 1973 with “Brak the Barbarian” in Chamber of Chills. Mayerik also worked on Supernatural Thrillers, Creatures on the Loose, and Conan before taking over the “Man-Thing” feature in Adventure into Fear, where he played a role in introducing Howard the Duck. Following his time at Marvel in the 1970s, Mayerik has since produced artwork for various other comic book publishers and roleplaying game companies.

Neal Adams

Neal Adams revolutionized the comic book industry with his groundbreaking artwork on X-Men and Avengers. Collaborating with Dennis O’Neil at DC Comics, he worked on Batman and transformed Green Lantern into the socially conscious Green Lantern/Green Arrow. Adams later founded Continuity Associates, which became home to popular characters like Bucky O’Hare and Ms. Mystic. After a period of political activism, Adams returned to comics to write and draw Batman: Odyssey for DC and provided art for Marvel’s New Avengers.

John Buscema (1927-2002)

John Buscema was a definitive Marvel artist, even authoring the instructional guide How To Draw Comics the Marvel Way. His career spanned from the Timely/Atlas era of the late 1940s and early 1950s. Stan Lee recruited Buscema from the advertising world to join the Marvel Bullpen shortly after the dawn of the Marvel Age. Following a lengthy run on Avengers, Buscema took on the highly anticipated first Silver Surfer series. He subsequently succeeded Jack Kirby on titles such as Fantastic Four and Thor. By the time of his retirement in 1996, Buscema had penciled virtually every Marvel title, with his personal favorite being Conan the Barbarian.
