Rumiko Takahashi

Rumiko Takahashi’s career began in 1978 with an honorable mention in Shogakukan’s New Comic Artist Contest for Those Selfish Aliens. Later that year, her alien comedy series, Urusei Yatsura, was serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday. This successful manga was adapted into an anime TV series and several films.

Takahashi continued her success with:

  • Maison Ikkoku (1980–1987)
  • Ranma 1⁄2 (1987–1996)
  • Inuyasha (1996–2008)

Other notable works include Mermaid Saga, Rumic Theater, and One-Pound Gospel.

Takahashi was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Awards Hall of Fame in 2018 and won the Grand Prix at FIDB Angoulême in 2019. She received the Shogakukan Manga Award twice: for Urusei Yatsura in 1981 and for Inuyasha in 2002.

Many of Takahashi’s works have been adapted into anime, live-action TV series, and films, continuing to entertain fans globally. Her signature style, known as the “Rumic World,” blends comedy, romance, fantasy, and martial arts, creating endearing characters and genres that defy simple categorization.
