Robert McCloskey
Robert McCloskey (1914-2003) was an acclaimed author and illustrator of children’s books. He received the Caldecott Medal for his distinguished picture books Make Way for Ducklings and Time of Wonder. Additionally, Blueberries for Sal and One Morning in Maine were recognized as Caldecott Honor Books.
McCloskey’s childhood in Hamilton, Ohio, inspired Homer Price, a depiction of American boyhood. He pursued his artistic education at the Vesper George School of Art in Boston and the National Academy of Design in New York. Although awarded the Prix de Rome, his studies abroad were postponed until after World War II.
He and his wife, Margaret Durand, later settled in Maine, where they raised their two daughters. Maine provided the backdrop and inspiration for many of his beloved stories.
The bronze statues of Robert McCloskey’s ducklings in Boston’s Public Gardens remain a popular attraction for children. His legacy endures through his timeless and cherished books.
