Robert Graves
Robert Graves was born in 1895 in Wimbledon. After serving as a captain in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers during the First World War, he dedicated his life to writing.
His prolific career yielded numerous historical novels, including:

Graves’ autobiography, Goodbye to All That (1929), was acclaimed as a candid self-portrait and a valuable war document.
Among his influential non-fiction works are:
- The White Goddess, exploring the poetic impulse.
- The Nazarine Gospel Restored (with Joshua Podro), a re-examination of primitive Christianity.
He also translated classical texts, including works by Apuleius, Lucan, and Suetonius for Penguin Classics. His compilation, The Greek Myths, was the first modern dictionary of Greek Mythology. His translation of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (with Omar Ali-Shah) is also published by Penguin.
Graves held the position of Professor of Poetry at Oxford in 1961 and was made an Honorary Fellow of St John’s College, Oxford, in 1971.
He died on 7 December 1985 in Majorca, where he had lived since 1929. He is remembered as a distinguished prose stylist, historical novelist, and memorist, and above all, as a dedicated poet, celebrated as “the greatest love poet in English since Donne.”
