Summary
Old Babushka, known throughout all of Moskva for her beautifully painted eggs, is preparing her eggs for the Easter Festival when she takes in an injured goose. Born in Lansing, Michigan in 1944, I spent my early years on my grandparents’ farm in Union City, Michigan. This time, filled with the magic of farm life and the inspiration of my grandparents, particularly my Babushka, shaped my life profoundly.
My parents divorced when I was three, and I spent school years with my mother and summers with my father, cherished by my grandparents in both households. These relationships deeply influenced my life and work, evident in the recurring theme of young people interacting with the elderly in my books.
I moved from the farm in 1949, living in Florida and then Oakland, California. There, I met my best friend, Stewart Grinnell Washington, and struggled with reading and math due to dyslexia, diagnosed at fourteen. With the help of a dedicated teacher, I overcame this learning disability and thrived.
I went on to university, earning degrees in Fine Art and Art History, eventually a Ph.D.. I restored ancient art and raised two children, Steven and Traci. At 41, I began writing children’s books, drawing on a lifelong passion for art and a family tradition of storytelling.
My career has been a joy. I draw inspiration from my imagination, nurtured by a childhood filled with stories rather than television. I encourage aspiring writers to listen to their inner voice and turn off the screens.
Now residing back in Union City, I intend to open my home to writing seminars, storytelling festivals, literature conferences, and other events celebrating children’s literature.
Born Patricia Ann Barber, to parents of Russian and Ukrainian descent on one side and Irish on the other, I grew up in both California and Michigan. I studied in the United States and Australia, specializing in Russian and Greek painting, and iconographic history. I am a museum consultant on the restoration of icons. I continue to support programs that encourage Russo-American friendships and understanding. I am also deeply involved in inner-city projects here in the U.S. that promote the peaceful resolution of conflict and encourage art and literacy programs.
I currently reside in Michigan, where I have a glorious old farm that was built during the time of Lincoln.
