Critics Review

“This is a wonderful book. Professor Nancy Snow, whose writings have guided a generation through the idea that diplomacy can and should both address and involve the public, here unpacks the career of a remarkable non-human diplomat: the storied battleship USS Missouri. Her text is in turns profound, insightful, and touching. At its heart [this book] speaks of a perhaps lost world in which the United States knew how to balance the example of its power with the power of its example. It is both a fitting memorial and a wonderful case study of what now looks like a lost golden age of U.S. diplomacy.”—Nicholas J Cull author of Reputational Security: Refocusing Public Diplomacy for a Dangerous Age

“Nancy Snow’s Battleship Diplomat is a masterful historical and cultural tribute to USS Missouri (BB 63), undoubtedly one of the most recognizable symbols of American sea power and a potent instrument of U.S. foreign policy from the last days of World War II to the end of the Cold War.”—Edward J. Marolda, PhD, former director of Naval History (Acting)

“The book speaks well for the largely ignored diplomatic utility of current and future large warships. This is a beautifully written and well-presented book.”—Baird Maritime
