Critics Review
A beautiful account of one woman’s story that shines with the truth of all our stories – Sophie Ward, author of Love and Other Thought Experiments
A stunning exploration of betrayal: the slow-fuse way it burns through mind and body – Tanya Shadrick, author of The Cure for Sleep
And Notre Dame is Burning is a heartbreakingly beautiful novel about the beginnings and ends of life and love and marriage, told with such deft precision that it feels both like a conversation with your best friend, and like discovering a literary masterpiece. Every single page holds some gem of wisdom. The prose is iridescent; It actually sparkles on the page. There are echoes of Claire Kilroy and Miranda July here, in that this is a wildy honest novel about the female experience. What a thrill to read such an extraordinarily accomplished debut. Miriam Robinson is a vital new voice in literary fiction - I absolutely loved it and can’t wait to see what she does next – Hattie Williams, author of Bitter Sweet
Robinson’s debut is exceptional. In writing Esther, she has beautifully captured some of the universal aspects of womanhood in a raw, unflinching novel that will linger with the reader long after the final page – Katie Fraser * The Bookseller *
This blazing debut novel explores the startling after-effects of a life gone up in flames… Robinson’s subject matter is demanding: it is her skill and subtlety that make this page-turning novel a beacon of hope, as its heroine discovers new ways of living - and of becoming herself – Erica Wagner * Harper’s Bazaar *
Miriam Robinson is an incredible writer and this is an astounding debut. A powerful literary novel about a woman who after a miscarriage tries to navigate her way through a fractious marriage whilst also being present for her daughter Annie. The unusual style of storytelling and the layout of the book cemented the feelings of the protagonist’s angst and emotions. This will definitely be on prize lists! – Nina Pottell * Prima Magazine *
A beautifully wrought, thought provoking novel from a thrilling new voice in literary fiction – Charlotte Heathcote * Mail on Sunday *
Lyrical and evocative * i paper *
And Notre Dame is Burning is sharp and heartbreaking, lit by epiphany and counter-epiphany – Katharine Kilalea, author of OK, Mr Field
Reading a novel that feels genuinely fresh is rare - especially in a debut - but this stunning story of a woman’s grief pulls it off * Good Housekeeping *
