About The Author

Michael Reason

Michael Reason was born and raised in Hobart, Tasmania, and moved to Melbourne after studying History at the University of Tasmania. Following a period in the financial sector, he found fulfilling work in customer service at the Scienceworks Museum in Spotswood. While there, he completed a Graduate Diploma of Museum Studies at Deakin University, which facilitated his transition into Collection Management, focusing on Science and Technology and Social History Collections. Notable projects included managing the Laurie Richards collection, comprising 80,000 large-format negatives documenting Melbourne’s commercial life from the 1950s to the 1970s.

In the 2000s, Michael joined the Curatorial team, initially as a generalist curator before establishing his own specialization, `Leisure and Social Spaces’. His curatorial interests encompass post-1900 fashion, film and television production and distribution, festivals and events (including Moomba, the Olympic Games, and the Melbourne Cup), Australian toys and games, and local jewellery design. Michael also holds curatorial responsibility for the museum’s iconic Phar Lap exhibition and related items.
