Critics Review

A thrilling counter-narrative to the canon of rock memoirs – Sophie Gilbert * New Statesman *
What sets this deceptively compelling memoir apart is that it isn’t simply another dutiful reflection on a life spent in and around music. Rather, her gossipy yarns counterpoint a far more interesting thesis about the vagaries of human connection: this is one woman’s quest for certainty * Irish Examiner *
A definitive account of what it meant to be a young person in the ‘90s… . she speaks for all music obsessives - then and now - who are looking for connection and community * Spin *
This compelling, raw and honest look-back reads like a free-flowing conversation about art, grief, music and the curious experience of growing up at the epicentre of the 1990s US alternative rock scene * Irish Independent *
Remarkable for its candour, its insights, its wit and its jaw-dropping revelations * Louder *
Countless writers have documented different aspects of this influential decade in rock, but [here] we get the first-hand perspective of a woman who experienced it from one of the most inside spaces possible. * Louder Than War *
If you weren’t lucky enough to be around in the 90s, Melissa Auf der Maur has done you a solid: Even The Good Girls Will Cry brings you about as close as is possible to experiencing it, without smearing your makeup or getting cigarette smoke on your clothes * Buzz magazine *
Our ‘90s fever dreams were beautiful but they were also brutal and only the good girls, like Melissa, have the guts to tell you that. – Shirley Manson
An intimate, poetic look at Melissa Auf der Maur’s experience making music before the distractions of social media, when musicians made music not for followers but for themselves, pouring everything they had into the sounds that defined a generation – Walton Goggins
Fearless, loyal and radically alive, Melissa Auf der Maur brings the same fire to her writing that she does to her life – Natasha Lyonne
As if through the lens of her camera, Melissa shows us a female experience of rock and roll where we as women rarely get to sit at the table and share in the spoils – Martha Wainwright, author of STORIES I MIGHT REGRET TELLING YOU
Stunningly intelligent, sharp-eyed and perceptive – Matthew Specktor, author of AMERICAN DREAM MACHINE
Auf der Maur is a superb writer, and also a tender one…A compassionate memoir that offers much more than ‘90s nostalgia * Kirkus Reviews *
