Description

In 2014, Dr. Lucy Hone, the trailblazer in the field of Resilient Grieving, was faced with her own inescapable sorrow after her twelve-year-old daughter was killed in a car accident. By developing—and following—the strategies of Resilient Grieving shared here, she found a proactive way to manage her grief, embrace life again, and discover profound meaning. In this completely updated and expanded second edition, she continues to shift the narrative on how to grieve.

  • With new scientific evidence, Dr. Hone demonstrates the inadequacy and potential harm of Kübler-Ross’s Five Stages model of grief.
  • In its place, Dr. Hone shares the best of contemporary grief advice—offering tools to handle emotions, manage relationships, and get the support you need—replacing helplessness with hope and a sense of control.
  • Here, also, are all-new, practical insights into how to keep your loved one’s memory alive.

Dr. Hone has never been more convinced that the tools of Resilient Grieving can transform the ways that readers approach grief, helping them draw on their innate ability to cope with loss and become active participants in their grief journey—and, in time, get back to living happy, healthy, meaningful lives, just as she has done.

Critic Reviews

"As heard on NPR’s Hidden Brain and CBS News
2017 Foreword INDIES Bronze Winner

"Hone shows us how to harness the (thankfully common) power of our own resilience to work our way through a horrible loss." -- The New York Times Book Review
"For anyone who has lost a loved one—Dr. Hone’s Resilient Grieving is an essential tool and beautifully written." -- Dr. Tara Narula, CBS News
"A recommended new book for those who are grieving . . . [Hone’s] metaphor for life after loss is both powerful and apt: Think of it as a scattered jigsaw puzzle, where the pieces of one’s former life have been scattered and now must be reconfigured in a new way." -- The Wall Street Journal
"The text provides an honest account of the personal struggles of families who experience sudden loss. There are no apologies made for stepping away from what some would consider social expectations during times of grief. It is that naked vulnerability that brings authority to the work." -- Choice
"There is a wealth of empathetic information in this book that will undoubtedly be uplifting to all who are grieving or know of others in the process." -- Library Journal
"Resilience researcher Lucy Hone began to question how we think about grief after a devastating loss in her own life. She shares the techniques she learned to help her cope with tragedy." -- NPR’s Hidden Brain
"A touching account of loss and a practical, research-based guide for finding hope and strength." -- Adam Grant, #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Think Again and Option B
