Description

Against an unflinching backdrop of 90s reservation life in the western Dakotas, Neither Wolf Nor Dog tells the story of two men, one white and one Native American, connected by their own understandings of life yet struggling to find a common voice. As they journey together through small Indian towns and down forgotten roads where the whisperings of the wind speak of ancestral voices, these two men will travel beyond myth and stereotype, revealing an America few people ever get to see.

One of the best books I have read for a while. Hard going in its theme, but vitally important for us to realise the impact that the arrival of the white man had upon the Native Indian, personified and voiced by the elders that the author travels with into the heart of darkness and illumination.

This book is a peaceful, engaging and intricate piece of art that offers deep insight into the contemporary and historic realities of First Nations and colonial encounters in the US. Nerburn doesn't shy away from the discomforts of the lessons he is being taught, nor his own perceptions that unravel through the process. At times uncomfortable, as it should be, it is an incredible book that I couldn't put down!
