Critics Review

It tugs the reader irresistibly into the story and into another time zone, as Archie is involved in a legendary local mining tragedy. Ingeniously fusing past and present, triumph and tears, this winner of the Hachette children’s novel award deserves more accolades yet * The Sunday Times *

It’s one that stayed with us long after we finished it…Dark Flood would make an excellent class read, especially for those studying mining history or child labour. It’s a powerful, hard-hitting book that may be challenging for younger readers, but its messages are important and impactful - and that’s why it’s in our top 5 of 2024. * Libraries 4 Schools *
