Joseph J. Romm
Dr. Joseph Romm served as principal deputy and then acting assistant secretary of energy efficiency and renewable energy in the mid-1990s. In this role, he managed a $1 billion budget dedicated to climate solutions across transportation, buildings, and industry, with a focus on areas such as hydrogen, fuel cells, energy storage, bioenergy, and renewables.
He is currently a senior research fellow at the University of Pennsylvania Center for Science, Sustainability, and the Media, where he focuses on climate solutions research.
In 2009, Rolling Stone recognized him as one of “100 People Who Are Reinventing America,” and Time magazine named him a “Hero of the Environment.” In 2024, he was honored with the Ban Ki-Moon Award for Environmental Leadership by the former U.N. Secretary General.
Dr. Romm is the author of eleven books. His work The Hype About Hydrogen was selected by Library Journal as one of the best science and technology books of 2004. His TEDx talk is titled “The Surprising Truth About Solving Climate Change.”
He holds a PhD in physics from MIT.
