About The Author

John le Carré

John le Carré (1931-2020)

John le Carré was a titan of espionage fiction, whose novels for six decades defined our understanding of the spy genre and the shadowy world it depicted. Born in 1931, the son of a confidence trickster, his early life was a tapestry woven with experiences between boarding school and the London underworld.

He found intellectual refuge at the University of Bern and later at Oxford. A brief period teaching at Eton preceded a career in British Intelligence, serving with both MI5 and MI6. It was while still a secret servant that he published his debut novel, Call for the Dead, in 1961.

His international reputation was cemented with his third novel, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. This acclaim was further solidified by his celebrated George Smiley trilogy: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Honourable Schoolboy, and Smiley’s People.

Following the end of the Cold War, le Carré broadened his thematic scope, delving into the complexities of the international arms trade and the War on Terror. His memoir, The Pigeon Tunnel, was published in 2016, followed by his last George Smiley novel, A Legacy of Spies, in 2017.

John le Carré passed away on December 12, 2020. His posthumous novel, Silverview, was published in 2021, leaving behind a legacy of unparalleled literary achievement in the realm of espionage.
