Treating Patients with Alcohol and Other Drug Problems

Robert D. Margolis, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist and has specialized in adolescent addiction and substance abuse since 977. He is the founder and executive director of Solutions Intensive Outpatient Program, a treatment program for adolescents in Roswell, Georgia. Dr. Margolis was director of psychological services at the Ridgeview Institute from 984 to 997. Dr. Margolis received his undergraduate degree from Duke University and his doctorate in clinical psychology from Georgia State University. He completed an APA-approved full-time predoctoral clinical psychology internship from Duke University’s Department of Psychiatry/Division of Medical Psychology. He holds the APA College Certificate of Proficiency in the Treatment of Alcohol and Other Psychoactive Substance Use Disorders. He is a fellow in APA’s Division 5 (Addictions). He has served as an APA consultant on addiction-related matters and has appeared in numerous television documentaries on alcohol and drug abuse problems. Dr. Margolis has authored more than 5 articles and several book chapters on substance abuse and dependence. In 997, he coauthored the first edition of this book with Joan E. Zweben. Joan E. Zweben, PhD, is the founder and executive director of the 4th Street Clinic and Medical Group ( 979 amp ndash 2 7) and the East Bay Community Recovery Project ( 989 amp ndash present) in Oakland, California. The East Bay Community Recovery Project has been providing medical and psychosocial services to alcohol and other drug-dependent patients and their families and is a training site for graduate students and interns in the San Francisco Bay Area. Through these organizations, she has collaborated with researchers locally and nationally since 98 and has been on the national steering committee of the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s Clinical Trials Network since 2 2. Dr. Zweben received her undergraduate degree from Brandeis University and her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Michigan. She is licensed in California, holds the APA College Certificate of Proficiency in the Treatment of Alcohol and Other Psychoactive Substance Use Disorders, and is a fellow of APA’s Division 5 (Addictions). Dr. Zweben is the author of four books and more than articles and book chapters and is the editor of 5 monographs on treating addiction. She is active in training professionals from a variety of disciplines who work in mental health or addiction treatment settings. She is also health sciences clinical professor of psychiatry in the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.
