Jim Magnuson
Jim Magnuson
For Jim Magnuson, rockhounding is more than a hobby; it’s a rewarding avocation that connects him with nature. He has been an avid hunter and student of gems, minerals, and fossils since childhood, first collecting stones in his native Illinois. These early experiences instilled in him the value of persistence and exploring less-traveled paths to discover unique or rare rocks.
Jim also shares his passion through writing, both creatively and from a practical perspective. His in-depth knowledge makes him a frequent presenter to rock and mineral clubs, geological societies, and educational institutions focused on outdoor and environmental interests.
Beyond prospecting and collecting, Jim enjoys lapidary arts, creating custom-polished stones and jewelry pieces for his small business. He also creates close-up photographic illustrations related to prospecting, hunting, and lapidary work. A former photographer for his high school and college newspapers and yearbooks, Jim honed his ability to capture compelling images of campus life, a skill he now applies to creating unique and insightful photographs for modern gem and mineral prospecting.
