Guinness World Records
Sir Hugh Beaver, the then managing director of the Guinness Brewery, conceived the idea for The Guinness Book of Records in 1951. During a shooting party, an argument arose about which game bird, the golden plover or the grouse, was the fastest in Europe. This question sparked the realization that a compendium of such facts could be highly popular.
His vision was brought to life by Norris and Ross McWhirter, who managed a fact-finding agency in London. They were commissioned to compile the book, and the first edition was published on August 27, 1955. It quickly climbed to the top of the British bestseller lists by Christmas of the same year.
