About The Author

Gary Thomas

Gary Thomas’s early life was marked by a nervous disposition, which led him to leave his 11-plus examination paper blank, resulting in attendance at a secondary modern school. He pursued a career in education, becoming a teacher before transitioning to educational psychology. He then became a professor of education at the University of Birmingham, where his work centered on inclusive education and social science research methodologies.

Throughout his career, Professor Thomas has directed numerous research projects, securing funding from various bodies including the AHRC, ESRC, Nuffield Foundation, Leverhulme Trust, the Department for Education, charities like Barnardo’s and the Cadmean Trust, local authorities, and other organizations.

He is a prolific author, having written or edited 30 books, numerous academic articles, and essays on educational issues for the national press. He also served as the editor for journals such as the British Educational Research Journal and Educational Review.

Professor Thomas is a family man with two grown-up daughters, one daughter still at school, and two grandchildren. His interests, listed alphabetically, include birds, chess, cycling, dogs, his family, gardening, reading, and writing. Despite his allegiance to Aston Villa football club, he maintains a positive outlook on life.
