About The Author
Frances Hodgson Burnett
Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924) was born in Manchester and experienced significant poverty following her father’s death in 1853. Her early life, marked by hardship, often inspired themes of rags-to-riches or riches-to-rags in her writing.
In 1865, her family emigrated to America, settling in Tennessee. Although still facing financial struggles, the new environment offered an improvement over the Manchester slums. To contribute financially, Frances began writing short pieces for American magazines. In 1873, she married Dr. Swan Burnett, and it was under this married name that she achieved international fame as a children’s author.
Burnett penned over forty books, with The Secret Garden and Little Lord Fauntleroy remaining her most recognized works today. In her later years, she developed eccentric habits, embraced spiritualism and mystic cults, and adopted a distinctive style of dress with frilly clothing and titian-colored wigs, which led to her being nicknamed ‘Fluffy’.
