Elizabeth Gaskell
Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-65) was born in London and grew up in Cheshire. In her mid-twenties, she started having poems and prose sketches published in journals, and she eventually became one of the most prominent authors of the Victorian era, with novels such as Mary Barton, Cranford, North and South and Wives and Daughters examining social inequalities in provincial England. Her most influential nonfiction work was the biography The Life of Charlotte Bronte.
