About The Author
Douglas Scott Tyler
Douglas Tyler, MD, MSHCT, currently holds the John Woods Harris Distinguished Chair in Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, where he is also a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery. He also holds an Adjunct Professor appointment at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in the Department of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Tyler’s previous leadership positions included Division Chief of Surgical Oncology and Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Duke University Medical Center; Chief of the Surgical Services at the Durham VA Medical Center; and within the Duke Cancer Institute he was both Head of the Melanoma program and Associate Director of the Duke Cancer Institute in charge of Strategic Planning. Dr. Tyler’s clinical practice focuses on GI cancers and melanoma. He has published over 270 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 75 book chapters. Dr. Tyler was inducted into the American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators in 2019. Dr. Tyler is a Senior Director on the American Board of Surgery, having completed a six-year term as a Director in 2016. Dr. Tyler is the immediate past President of the Society of Surgical Oncology and Councilperson at large for the Society of Surgical Chairs.
