Eleanor Robson Belmont (1878–1979) was an American actress and philanthropist. Born Eleanor Robson in Wigan, England, she achieved fame as a stage actress in the United States before marrying August Belmont Jr. in 1910. After her marriage, she retired from the stage and dedicated herself to philanthropic pursuits. Belmont was actively involved in various charitable organizations and is best known for her significant contributions to the Metropolitan Opera. She played a pivotal role in saving the opera company from financial ruin during the Great Depression and served as the first woman on its board of directors. Her leadership and fundraising efforts were instrumental in ensuring the Metropolitan Opera’s continued success and cultural significance.
