About The Author

The Brothers Grimm
Jakob Ludwig Grimm (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Karl Grimm (1786–1859) were born in Hanau, Germany. The brothers were part of a family of nine children who lived in the countryside. The sudden death of their father and the harsh circumstances the family endured greatly influenced the way the Brothers Grimm eventually interpreted and wrote their tales.
While studying law at the University of Marburg, the Brothers Grimm developed a love of folk poetry. Their first volume of fairy tales, Children’s and Household Stories, was published in 1812. This collection of stories, told to them by peasants and villagers, was created as a collaborative effort: Jakob did the research behind the stories, and Wilhelm crafted these stories for children.
