Dan Simmons (1948-2026)
Born in Illinois in 1948, Dan Simmons grew up in various cities and small towns across the Midwest. He earned a BA in English from Wabash College in 1970, receiving a national Phi Beta Kappa Award for his achievements in fiction, journalism, and art during his senior year.
His first story was published in 1982, the same day his daughter was born, a coincidence he often cited as a grounding force, helping him maintain perspective on the balance between writing and life. Simmons transitioned to full-time writing in 1987.
He was recognized for his versatility, with a body of work that encompassed fantasy, science fiction, horror, suspense, historical fiction, noir crime fiction, and mainstream literary fiction. Dan Simmons garnered numerous accolades throughout his career, including the Hugo Award, the World Fantasy Award for his debut novel Song of Kali (1985), and the Bram Stoker Award.
