Christopher Isherwood
Christopher Isherwood was born in Cheshire, England, in 1904. After leaving Cambridge, he pursued a brief period of medical study before publishing his first novel, All the Conspirators, in 1928. This was followed by The Memorial in 1932.
From 1928, Isherwood spent much of his time abroad, living for four years in Berlin and subsequently in various European countries. His time in Berlin heavily influenced his writing, resulting in the novels Mr Norris Changes Trains (1935) and Goodbye to Berlin (1939).
In 1939, Isherwood moved to California, which became his permanent residence. During World War II, he contributed to the American Friends Service Committee. In 1946, he became a U.S. citizen. His American period saw the publication of five novels: Prater Violet, The World in the Evening, Down There on a Visit, A Single Man, and A Meeting by the River. He also authored a travel book, The Condor and the Cows, and a biography, Ramakrishna and his Disciples.
Later works included Kathleen and Frank (1971), a compilation of his parents’ correspondence and his mother’s diary, his autobiographical Christopher and his Kind (1977), detailing his experiences from 1929 to 1939, and My Guru and His Disciple (1980), which recounted his friendship with Swami Prabhavananda. Christopher Isherwood died in 1986.
