♦ This Spanish-language picture book about half-sisters will resonate with many blended families. Mari and Luz are half-sisters who see each other when Luz visits on the weekends. The girls always have a lot of fun together, but Mari can’t understand why Luz can’t stay longer. One day, Luz gets her wish when Mari’s mother calls to say she is going to be two hours late. The girls make a list of all the fun things they can do and use their math skills to determine how long each activity takes and how much they can do in two hours. The text consists of narration and dialogue. Each warm illustration depicts what is happening in the text on the same page. The colorful artwork appears to be digital art. The expressions of the characters are visible, even the family dog. The family is Latine, with a Dominican flag displayed in the living room and on a set of dominoes. They have skin in different shades of brown and a variety of textured hair. This “Steamworks” book incorporates math into the story seamlessly. There are also moments of responsibility when the girls clean up after themselves (after being told) and sweet moments of a big sister helping her little sister understand why they can’t be together all the time. VERDICT This positive story on half-siblings will appeal to all types of families and is a must-buy for the children’s collection.
