Critics Review

5 Stars Readers Favourite review by Lucinda E ClarkeThe Maiden by Alexia Saint Claire is a coming-of-age story with a difference. Based on the true story of Joan of Arc who led the French to victory against the English in the 15th century, we follow her from the age of ten when she experienced her first vision. The author takes us right back in time and into the world of rural France. I loved the descriptions of nature, the simple rural life of living off the land, and the peaceful family working together. All is not well, as marauding English soldiers threaten the village not once but twice, and the family is forced to flee. The thoughts and fears of a simple and illiterate peasant girl are so well painted, alongside the faith she follows and the total belief in her conversations with saintly figures sent by God. Although this peasant girl has no idea how she is equipped to meet a king and subsequently lead France in the battle against the English, her blind faith is endearing. This tale of a pure soul, with none of today’s teenage angst, is a refreshing change against the backdrop of a simpler, non-materialistic life. It is a joy to read and ‘live in’ for a few hours. The author has shared a fascinating period of history and brings Jehanne d’Arc vividly to life six hundred years later.
