He has been reporting on the Tour de France and other top road cycling events since 1992. His first book was The Eagle of Toledo, a biography of cycling's greatest ever climber, Federico Martin Bahamontes. He has also written Reckless, a biography of the ill-fated Luis Ocana, the 1973 Tour winner and considered Eddy Merck's top Grand Tour rival, and The End of the Road, an account of the 1998 Tour de France.
