About The Author
Johanna Spyri
Johanna Spyri (1827-1901) was born Johanna Heusser in Hirzel, a Swiss village near Zurich. She was the daughter of a doctor and one of many children. She married Bernhard Spyri, a lawyer, in 1852, and they moved to Zurich. They had one son, Bernhard, for whom Johanna began making up stories. Her first story was published in 1870 to raise money for soldiers. Heidi was published in 1880, inspired by her love for the Alps, and became a success. After the deaths of her husband and son, Johanna took in a niece and dedicated herself to writing and charity. She published over fifty books for adults and children, but Heidi remains her most famous work.
