Shawn Martinbrough
Shawn Martinbrough is the author of How to Draw Noir Comics: The Art and Technique of Visual Storytelling (Penguin Random House). He is an Eisner Award-nominated artist whose comic book projects include:
- Batman: Detective Comics

- Luke Cage Noir
- The Black Panther
- Hellboy
Martinbrough is also a contributor to Vanity Fair.
He illustrated Thief of Thieves, a graphic novel series co-created with Robert Kirkman. He also illustrated the Eisner Award-nominated Promethee 13:13 (ditions Delcourt-Soleil and ABLAZE).
Martinbrough is the writer of Red Hood: The Hill for DC Comics, which introduces multiple new characters to Batman’s Gotham City. The prelude issue, Red Hood: The Hill #0, sold out one week after its release.
He is a co-author of Judge Kim and the Kids’ Court (Simon & Schuster) and the artist of Like Lava in My Veins (Nancy Paulsen Books/Penguin Random House), an NAACP Image Award-nominated children’s book written by Derrick D. Barnes. Like Lava in My Veins is a USA Today bestseller and was featured on NPR’s “Books We Love” and Kirkus Review’s “Best Picture Books” lists for 2023.
