Critics Review

A 2026 Bank Street College Best Children’s Book of the Year
A 2027 Kentucky Bluegrass Award (Grades 3-5) Nominee
A Shelf Awareness Best Book of the Week

”[E]xploratory text strikes an intimate chord that should immediately put any audience at ease, extending into ideas about consciousness and self-discovery, and aligning the act with everything from ‘focusing’ to ‘growing’ to ‘magic.’ … It’s like having a series of conversations with a cool, totally nonjudgmental, knows-the-ropes friend.” —STARRED REVIEW, Publishers Weekly

“In this everything-is-possible guide to drawing, a buoyant, conspiratorial voice invites all ages to experience the simple joy of making marks on paper.” —STARRED REVIEW, Booklist

“An inspirational primer on the art of drawing showing how the art form is for everyone.” —School Library Journal

“Haidle’s illustration style is unusual, combining human and animal forms, visual sequences, and humorous depictions of abstract concepts. This comprehensive introduction provides much fodder for artistic growth and experimentation.” —The Horn Book

“Drawing Is … promotes an inclusive, purposefully unintimidating approach by focusing on the process rather than the product, and offers all the encouragement that anyone who blinks, breathes, and reads — or listens to someone reading — might need to open a sketchbook and give drawing a try!” —Shelf Awareness

”[F]rom the very first page, it challenges young (and older) readers to think about what it means to use your imagination in a visual form… . [T]his is one of the best, most complete, books on the subject I have seen, a truly essential work.” —Imaginary Elevators
