ERNESTO GUEVARA DE LA SERNA
Born in Rosario, Argentina, on June 14, 1928, Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, commonly known as Che Guevara, embarked on a transformative journey during his medical studies in Buenos Aires. A trip with his friend Alberto Granado across Latin America on an old Norton motorcycle, later chronicled in The Motorcycle Diaries, exposed him to the continent’s social and political realities.
Witnessing the Bolivian revolution in 1953 and the US-backed overthrow of the democratically elected government of Jacobo Arbenz in Guatemala in 1954 profoundly shaped his worldview. Forced to flee Guatemala, he found refuge in Mexico City. There, he connected with exiled Cuban revolutionaries and met Fidel Castro in 1955.
Che joined Castro’s expedition to Cuba, where the revolutionary war commenced in the Sierra Maestra mountains. Initially serving as the troop doctor, he rose through the ranks, becoming a Rebel Army commander in July 1957.
Following the rebels’ triumph on January 1, 1959, Che played a pivotal role in the new revolutionary government and the political organization that evolved into the Communist Party of Cuba in 1965.
