Ruth Gamble

Ruth Gamble is a David Myers Fellow at La Trobe University, affiliated with the Department of Archaeology and History, the China Studies Research Centre, and the Centre for the Study of the Inland.

She is an environmental and cultural historian of Tibet and the Himalaya. Her first book, Reincarnation in Tibetan Buddhism: The Third Karmapa and the Invention of a Tradition (Oxford University Press, 2018), explores the connections between Tibet’s reincarnation lineages and its sacred geography.

Ruth has produced and co-authored the eTextbook series Introduction to the Tibetan Language (Australian National University Press, 2018). She has also published numerous articles and book chapters on Himalayan secular and sacred environments.

She is a member of the Lokaksi Translator team, which translates Buddhist texts for the 84000 project. Currently, she is writing a book about the Yarlung Tsangpo River and researching the intersection of belief and ecology in the Himalaya.
