Kentaro Miura debuted his manga Berserk Prototype, a 48-page introduction to the Berserk fantasy world, in 1988 while attending Nihon University. The work earned him a prize from the Comi Manga School. After receiving his doctorate in 1989, Miura began work on King of Wolves, a project based on a script by Buronson, the writer of Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the North Star).
The first volume of Berserk was released in 1990 to limited success. Miura later collaborated with Buronson again on the manga Japan. Miura’s fame grew significantly after Berserk’s “The Golden Age” story arc. The immense success of this masterpiece established him as one of the most prominent contemporary manga artists.
In 1997, Miura supervised the production of 25 anime episodes of Berserk, which aired on NTV that same year. The series has also inspired a wide range of merchandise, including statues, action figures, key rings, video games, and a trading card game. In 2002, Kentaro Miura received second place in the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize of Excellence for Berserk. He resides in Tokyo, Japan.
