Boleslaw Prus
Bolesław Prus (1847-1912)
Born Aleksander Głowacki in Hrubieszów, Poland, Bolesław Prus was orphaned at a young age and raised by relatives. He participated in the January 1863 uprising against Russian rule, was wounded in battle, and briefly imprisoned. After finishing high school and attending university, he worked various jobs before becoming a journalist. Prus gained renown for his feuilletons, particularly his Kroniki, and his short stories. His four acclaimed novels—The Outpost (1885), The Doll (1890), Emancipated Women (1894), and The Pharaoh (1897)—cemented his literary reputation. In his later years, Prus focused on social reform and philanthropy.
