Jean “Moebius” Giraud

Jean Giraud, known professionally as Moebius, was a French artist who achieved renown in two distinct phases of his career.

Initially recognized for his gritty western series Blueberry, Giraud began a second career under the pseudonym Moebius in 1963. This new persona focused on a series of short stories, which eventually led to international fame for his science fiction, artistic, and erotic works. He is particularly celebrated for his collaborations with Alejandro Jodorowsky, including the wordless comic fantasy Arzach.

In 1983, Moebius co-founded the Aedena company and relocated to Los Angeles. During his time in the United States, he saw some of his most significant works published by Marvel Comics, and he illustrated an episode of Silver Surfer for Stan Lee.

Beyond his extensive comic and illustration work, Moebius also made substantial contributions to the film industry. He provided preliminary designs for films such as Alien, Tron, The Abyss, Masters of the Universe, and The Fifth Element. Additionally, he created concept art for Alejandro Jodorowsky’s ambitious, though ultimately unrealized, adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune.

Moebius passed away in Paris on March 10, 2012, at the age of 73.
