Jean Giraud (Moebius)
French artist Jean Giraud, also known by his pen name Moebius, built a prolific second career starting in 1963 with a series of short stories, following his success as a comic artist for the hard-boiled western series Blueberry. He became world-renowned for his science-fiction, artistic, and erotic art, particularly admired for his collaborations with Alejandro Jodorowsky, including the wordless comic fantasy Arzach.
In 1983, Giraud co-founded the Aedena company and relocated to Los Angeles. During his time in the USA, he saw major works published by Marvel Comics and illustrated an episode of Silver Surfer with Stan Lee.
Beyond his extensive comics and illustration work, Moebius was actively involved in the film industry. He provided preliminary designs for films such as Alien, Tron, The Abyss, Masters of the Universe, and The Fifth Element. He also created concept art for Alejandro Jodorowsky’s unrealized adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune.
Moebius passed away in Paris on March 10, 2012, at the age of 73.
