Mark Gruenwald (1953-1996)
Famed for his pioneering work on the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe and his magnum opus Squadron Supreme, Mark Gruenwald was a pivotal writer and editor at Marvel Comics. His extensive contributions include a run of over one hundred issues of Captain America, multiple sagas for Marvel Two-in-One, and several miniseries such as Contest of Champions, Marvel’s first multi-hero epic. Gruenwald also delved into the Marvel Universe’s ancient history, writing and penciling a series of What If? backup stories.
Roy Thomas
Roy Thomas began his career at the Marvel Bullpen as a writer and editor under the tutelage of Stan Lee. He scripted significant runs for nearly every major Marvel title of the era, including Amazing Spider-Man, Avengers, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, Sub-Mariner, Thor, and X-Men. Thomas penned the first ten years of Marvel’s Conan the Barbarian and Savage Sword of Conan, and launched influential series like Defenders, Iron Fist, Invaders, and Warlock. At DC Comics, he developed All-Star Squadron, Infinity Inc., and related titles, playing a crucial role in the revival of the Golden Age Justice Society of America. Later, Thomas became the editor of Alter Ego, a magazine dedicated to comic book history, and co-scripted the sword-and-sorcery films Fire and Ice and Conan the Destroyer.
