About The Author

Stan Lee

Stan Lee (1922-2018)

Stan Lee was a writer and editor who made comic-book history with Jack Kirby in 1961 with Fantastic Four #1. The immense popularity of their new style inspired Lee to develop similarly themed characters, including the Hulk and X-Men with Kirby, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange with Steve Ditko, and Daredevil with Bill Everett. After creating dozens of issues for his characters, Lee allowed other writers to take over while maintaining editorial control. He was instrumental in expanding Marvel into a multimedia empire. In his later years, his frequent cameo appearances in Marvel films made him a globally recognized figure.

Jack Kirby

Born Jacob Kurtzberg in 1917, Jack Kirby came of age during the nascent American comic book industry. He began his career by co-creating the patriotic hero Captain America with Joe Simon during the rise of Nazism. Captain America’s adventures captivated millions and inspired American troops during World War II. As public interest in superheroes waned after the war, Kirby shifted his focus in the 1950s to other genres like monsters, Westerns, crime, and the pioneering Young Romance Comics.

In 1961, Kirby returned to superheroes to illustrate Fantastic Four #1, a pivotal issue for Marvel Comics. Written by Stan Lee, the team’s debut revolutionized the industry with Kirby’s dynamic, action-packed artwork. For the next decade, Kirby and Lee introduced a prolific array of new characters, including the Avengers, the Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, the Silver Surfer, and the X-Men, forming the bedrock of the Marvel Universe.

Kirby moved to DC Comics in the early 1970s, continuing his prolific output. He returned to Marvel in 1975, writing and illustrating Captain America and introducing his final major concept, the Eternals. In the 1980s, Kirby expanded his talents to television animation, contributing to series like Thundarr the Barbarian and Turbo Teen. Kirby passed away in 1994, but his impact on the comic book industry remains profound, inspiring countless artists and writers who continue to draw from his extensive universe of characters and concepts.
