Lesley Downer
Lesley Downer grew up in a home filled with books on Asia, her mother being Chinese and her father a professor of Chinese. Japan, however, held a greater fascination for her, and she lived there for fifteen years.
She has authored numerous books exploring Japan and its culture, including Geisha: The Secret History of a Vanishing World and Madame Sadayakko: The Geisha who Seduced the West. Downer has also presented television programs on Japan for Channel 4, the BBC, and NHK.
She currently resides in London with her husband, the author Arthur I. Miller, and continues to visit Japan annually.
