Patricia Polacco
Patricia Polacco was born Patricia Ann Barber in Lansing, Michigan, in 1944. She spent her early childhood in Michigan, including time on her grandparents’ farm in Union City, a period she remembers as magical and influential. Her parents divorced when she was three, and she split her time between her mother’s home in Florida and California, and her father’s home in Michigan. These experiences, particularly her relationships with her grandparents, deeply shaped her perspective on intergenerational connections, which often feature in her work.
She lived in Oakland, California, for most of her formative years. Despite struggling with reading and math due to dyslexia, a learning disability she was diagnosed with at fourteen, she excelled academically after receiving support from a teacher. This experience instilled in her a strong belief in the potential of learning disabled individuals.
Polacco pursued higher education, earning an M.F.A. and a Ph.D. in Art History with a specialization in Russian and Greek painting and iconography. She worked as a museum consultant specializing in the restoration of ancient art.
She began writing children’s books at the age of 41. Her artistic talents, which manifested early with a strong ability in drawing, painting, and sculpture, complemented her storytelling. Coming from families of rich storytelling traditions from Ukraine, Russia, and Ireland, she found it natural to translate the stories she heard and imagined onto paper, often illustrating them herself.
Polacco’s work often explores themes of family, imagination, and the importance of listening to one’s inner voice, a perspective she attributes partly to growing up without television. She has traveled extensively, particularly in Russia, and has been involved in programs promoting Russo-American understanding and inner-city initiatives focused on conflict resolution, art, and literacy.
As a mother of two grown children, Steven and Traci, Patricia Polacco currently resides in Union City, Michigan, on a historic farm. She has expressed intentions to open her home and community for writing seminars, storytelling festivals, and other events celebrating children’s literature.
