About The Author
David Sain
DAVID SAIN
David Sain is an architect and builder who has worked with Dan Rockhill at Rockhill and Associates since 1988. He has observed the creation and growth of Studio 804 and has occasionally assisted when needed. For the two projects described in this book, he served as an observer. He engaged in daily conversations with Rockhill about the work. In compiling this book, he utilized this close proximity but also conducted interviews with Rockhill and shared several drafts for review and editing. The aim was to accurately represent the remarkable work Dan and his students accomplished during these two years, which are consistent with their achievements over nearly three decades. In addition to discussions and interviews with Dan, extensive use was made of documents completed by students at the end of both years detailing their involvement in the project. These documents served as guides for future students and provided valuable information about the specifics of the design and construction. These documents, along with photos taken by Rockhill and the students, formed the basis of the book. For the past 15 years, in addition to working for Rockhill and Associates, he has taught two building technology courses at the University of Kansas, focusing on teaching architecture students about building construction. He also recently established SAIN WORKS, a small fabrication shop for custom projects.
