William Still
William Still
William Still (1821-1902) was an African American abolitionist, writer, historian, and a key conductor on the Underground Railroad. Prior to the American Civil War, he served as the chairman of the Vigilance Committee of the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society. In this role, he directly assisted fugitive slaves and meticulously kept records that aided in the reunification of families.
Born in a free state, Still’s father successfully purchased his own freedom. His mother had escaped from slavery twice. Despite his father’s freedom, under federal slave law, William Still was legally considered a slave. He played a crucial role in helping as many as 800 slaves escape to freedom.
