About The Author
Volker Gurtler
Dr. Gurtler completed a Ph.D. in Microbiology at La Trobe University in 1996. His doctoral research focused on developing a universal bacterial typing technique utilizing the 16S-23S rDNA spacer region, a method now widely employed in diagnostic, environmental, and veterinary microbiology. His publications on this topic have garnered over 1000 citations, with a 1996 review in the journal “Microbiology” alone exceeding 830 citations.
Dr. Gurtler also authored an invited review on bacterial isolate genomic typing, taxonomy, and identification for the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology (IJSEM). Beyond fundamental research, he has applied his expertise in molecular microbiology and human molecular genetics within medical diagnostic laboratories.
His extensive experience in diagnostic microbiology has led to the implementation of a culture-independent method for identifying Mycobacterium species directly from clinical specimens positive for acid-fast bacilli. He was also involved in the discovery of Nocardia veterana and the development of numerous diagnostic tests.
For the past twelve years, Dr. Gurtler has served as an Editor for the Journal of Microbiological Methods (JMM). For the last five years, he has been the Serial Editor for Methods in Microbiology (MIM), overseeing the publication of nine volumes covering diverse subjects including biofilms, nanotechnology, COVID-19, and fluorescent probes.
