About The Author

Victoria Shmidt

Victoria Shmidt

Victoria Shmidt’s work examines the historical roots of segregation, exploring the legacy of colonial and socialist policies in Central Eastern European countries. Her academic journey began in critical social policy, fostering a deep interest in the historical origins of ongoing institutional violence against marginalized groups.

In 2008, Shmidt joined Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic. There, she focused on institutional violence against the Roma and people with disabilities in the Czech lands. This research led her to a deeper understanding of race science and racial thinking as both agents and structures of nation-building. She advocates for revising conventional approaches to the role of researchers and academic institutions in extreme forms of transgression, questioning spatial, temporal, and ideological boundaries.
