Critic Reviews

“"Traer Scott's ninth photographic book comprises 70 colour portraits of 25 bird of prey species. Shot close-up in her studio against plain backdrops, her images show the birds in great detail and encourage us to marvel at the variety of shapes and sizes in these intensely watchful, aerodynamic creatures." - Royal Photography Society Journal-- -”

"[A] gorgeous, fascinating collection of birds - to inform and help identify 25 different species of hawks, owls, falcons, a bald eagle, kestrels, a Mississippi kite, a turkey vulture, and more.Through the author's lens the raptors she introduces emerge as personalities, not just types: wise, mysterious, and fiercely confident. It's impossible not to be in awe of the their intensity and challenges to thrive in our complicated environment."

  • Action Line "[Raptors] is devoted to dramatic portraits of birds that many of us rarely get to see in the wild, and almost never up close..During her time working on the book, she encountered bald eagles, vultures, owls, falcons, and other birds of prey, taking studio portraits of them that highlight their every feather."
  • Mental Floss "This new book by Traer Scott is a delightful collection of wildlife portraiture. It is jam-packed with colour photographs of 25 types of birds, from owls to bald eagles, vultures to kites. Through Scott's lens, the birds in Raptors emerge as personalities and not just species; from the wise and quizzical to the fiercely self-possessed and the flighty. The perfect book for the twitchers among us."
  • Daily Mail (UK) "Informative text entries accompany each of the 28 raptor species that are profiled, but it is Scott's 70 crystal-clear images of the hawks, eagles, falcons and owls that you will get lost in."
  • London Free Press (Canada) "A collection of intimate portraits evidencing the enigmatic birds' majesty, feral wisdom, grace, and primordial authority..Unlike most of Scott's books, Raptors doesn't come with an overt call to action. But its 70 color photos present 25 different species, both exotic and familiar-many of which are endangered, and Scott's accompanying text highlights the specific threats faced by each. 'Whenever I work with animals, my primary goal is to make people appreciate not only their beauty, but also their amazing feats of adaptation-because really, any species still on this planet represents an incredible evolutionary miracle."
  • Sierra "Raptors: Portraits of Birds of Prey is filled with remarkable images of birds that against all expectations were photographed in the studio rather than in the wild. The result of photographing in the studio is a much more intimate portrayal of birds that are uniquely intelligent, fierce, and graceful. Traer Scott photographed hawks, falcons, eagles, owls, vultures, and many other birds, each raptor displaying their own penchant for a pose that exemplifies their species. And her wonderfully lucid and articulate introduction, full of anecdotes and useful information, enhances our knowledge of raptors and birds in general, and is a pleasure to read."
  • New York Journal of Books "Raptors: Portraits of Birds of Prey" by Traer Scott, a wildlife photographer whose pleasure in, and enthusiasm for, her subjects echoes throughout her delightful foreword and exquisite close-up color shots, made at several wildlife centers."
  • Virginan-Pilot (Norfolk, VA) "Traer Scott's ninth photographic book comprises 70 colour portraits of 25 bird of prey species. Shot close-up in her studio against plain backdrops, her images show the birds in great detail and encourage us to marvel at the variety of shapes and sizes in these intensely watchful, aerodynamic creatures."
  • Royal Photography Society Journal "In her own inimitable style, animal photographer Traer Scott shows us 25 of the most enigmatic, powerful and graceful raptors in this set of vivid colour photographs..Dramatic, intimate, amusing or beautiful, each image reflects the photographer's skill in capturing the character of her subjects."
